High Court Delivers Guilty Verdict in TLTB Corruption Case

The High Court in Lautoka has delivered a guilty verdict against Inosi Tauvoli, a former employee of the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), on three counts of Abuse of Office. The offenses took place between October 19, 2018, and January 18, 2019, during Tauvoli’s tenure as a Senior Estate Officer at TLTB.

Justice Aruna Aluthge noted that Tauvoli improperly processed and approved four land lease applications belonging to three Chinese individuals without adhering to required policies, thereby harming the rights of both the TLTB and the landowning unit. The judgment confirmed that all elements of Abuse of Office were met and proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The defense counsel, Amele Tubuitamana from Niudamu Lawyers, represented Tauvoli, while the prosecution was led by Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Senior State Counsel, Arieta Vaganalau. The case has been adjourned, with a sentencing hearing set for March 24, 2025.

This case highlights ongoing issues related to corruption within public service roles in Fiji and underscores the judiciary’s commitment to accountability. It echoes recent incidents involving former TLTB employees facing similar charges of misconduct. Just recently, two other former employees of TLTB were also charged with Abuse of Office, reflecting a broader scrutiny of corruption in government institutions.

As these legal proceedings unfold, they foster hope for enhanced integrity within public services and an expectation that such actions will prompt greater transparency, thereby rebuilding trust with the public.
