The High Court in Lautoka has found Roneel Kumar and Gaston Kean guilty of aggravated robbery and theft following a break-in at the home of Diana Ali Nand on March 27, four years ago. Justice Aruna Aluthge highlighted the compelling evidence provided by the prosecution, particularly CCTV footage that showcased the incident.

The court learned that Kumar and Kean unlawfully entered Nand’s residence, stealing valuable items including a laptop, $5,750 in cash, a gold watch, two gold bangles, and a gold chain. The prosecution convincingly demonstrated that the duo intended to permanently deprive Nand of her possessions.

Defence arguments were dismissed as lacking credibility, especially Justice Aluthge’s findings regarding Kumar’s alibi and the testimony of his partner, Astika. The judge deemed Astika’s statements unreliable and noted her potential bias in protecting Kumar, pointing out inconsistencies in her account. Additionally, Kumar’s attempt to influence a key witness by sending money through MPAiSA significantly weakened his defense.

Similarly, the court rejected Kean’s alibi, which included an unsupported claim about his physical condition. The strong resemblance captured in the CCTV footage further implicated him in the crime.

The court found both men guilty on all counts, with Justice Aluthge concluding that the evidence overwhelmingly substantiated their criminal involvement. Sentencing for Kumar and Kean is scheduled for Friday.

This conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough investigation and the role of technology in crime-solving, offering hope for stronger community safety as justice is served.
