The High Court in Suva has convicted a 73-year-old electrician for committing sexual offenses against a former Class 8 student in Navua. The now 17-year-old victim had known the accused as someone who repaired appliances and had previously been to her home.
According to court records, the incident occurred when the victim entered the vehicle of the accused while waiting at a bus stop. Upon reaching a village, the accused allegedly took her measurements with a tape and proceeded to take nude photographs of her while also engaging in sexual acts. The victim later explained that she complied out of fear. She reported the incident to her mother on October 16, 2023.
The accused denied the allegations. Initially facing multiple charges, including four counts of rape, he was acquitted of two of those counts due to insufficient evidence. However, he was found guilty of two counts of rape and a single count of engaging in pornographic activities involving juveniles. He also faced a lesser conviction of indecent assault and was acquitted of one charge of sexual assault. A sentencing hearing is expected soon.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges surrounding sexual offenses, particularly those involving minors, and brings attention to the legal processes that seek to address such crimes. The conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough legal proceedings in protecting vulnerable individuals and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
