The High Court has authorized the State’s request for a DNA test on Anare Vuli Cilicewa, the individual accused of murdering Shabreen Shain Ali in Raiwaqa, Suva, last year. The State prosecutor, Zenith Zunaid, requested a buccal swab for DNA analysis to compare with samples retrieved from a condom and other items near the crime scene.

Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu granted the order during a session at the High Court, stipulating that Mr. Cilicewa must provide written consent by May 7. Mr. Zunaid emphasized the significance of the DNA comparison, linking it directly to the evidence from the murder scene.

Cilicewa is alleged to have engaged in a heated argument with Ali before fatally injuring her. His attorney, Tobia Ravuniwa, confirmed that there was no objection to the DNA testing. Additionally, the prosecutor indicated that the prosecution would not rely on a certain internal report from the police forensic team, which was deemed incomplete and improperly disclosed.

The court proceedings also highlighted the importance of transparency and the integrity of evidence in serious criminal cases. Cilicewa, who remains in custody, will return to court on May 7 for further developments in his legal representation and the case.

This case continues to illuminate the complexities of legal proceedings in serious crimes, and it is hoped that thorough investigations will reveal the truth, paving the way for justice. The role of modern forensic science in legal proceedings is crucial and often serves as a key element in ensuring truth and accountability in the judicial process.
