The Hibiscus Festival is currently in progress, offering attendees the opportunity to engage in the touch rugby competition that kicked off yesterday at Albert Park in Suva. Tevita Mau, the president of Touch Federation Fiji, announced that at least eight secondary schools will participate in this two-day event.
He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education for permitting schools to join the competition and indicated that the federation will seek to include touch rugby in the school curriculum starting next term in 2024.
Mau noted the importance of schools in the federation’s focus and emphasized that this event marks a significant step towards developing the sport among students. He acknowledged the efforts of school administrators and teachers for their support, as well as the volunteers contributing to the sport’s promotion at the grassroots level.
He also appreciated the festival organizers for incorporating touch rugby into the week’s activities. Mau encouraged the public to attend and support the schools, highlighting that emerging talents could potentially represent Fiji in the 2028 Touch World Cup and the 2031 Pacific Games.
The competition will continue today at Albert Park starting at 10 AM. In the latest results, John Wesley College defeated Queen Victoria School 4-1, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College triumphed over Lami High School 6-1, MGM bested QVS 4-1, and Suva Grammar School drew with QVS.
