Hibiscus Festival Theft: Who’s Responsible?

The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has stated that food stall operators at the Hibiscus Festival are responsible for safeguarding their own baking and cooking equipment. In an interview with this newspaper, Mr. Nalumisa acknowledged the issue of theft at the festival, following a business owner’s social media post expressing frustration over missing catering utensils and equipment last Saturday morning.

“In terms of individuals managing their own stalls, that falls under their responsibility,” Mr. Nalumisa remarked. He emphasized the need to investigate whether there was an adequate presence of security personnel, especially during the night and day, as previously arranged for the festival.

He noted, “I was informed that there were security officers present, but was there enough?”

Opetaia Ravai, chairperson of the Hibiscus standing committee, confirmed that security officers were on-site but indicated that the committee would gather more information regarding the incident. “There is security present at the Hibiscus Festival,” he stated. Concerning the recent theft at a stall, Mr. Ravai acknowledged hearing about it but said he was not fully aware of the details. He also mentioned he was uncertain whether a report had been filed with the police or the committee.
