Hibiscus Festival Kicks Off with Thrilling Touch Rugby Action!

The Hibiscus Festival is currently taking place, offering attendees the opportunity to engage in a touch rugby competition that kicked off yesterday at Albert Park in Suva.

Tevita Mau, president of the Touch Federation Fiji, announced that the two-day event will feature participation from at least eight secondary schools. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education for their support in allowing schools to participate and indicated that the federation aims to discuss the potential inclusion of touch rugby in the school’s curriculum beginning next term.

Mau noted, “Schools have always been a priority for us, but we have not fully developed this area until now, making this event our starting point.” He also extended thanks to the schools, their administrators, teachers, and volunteers for their dedicated efforts in promoting the sport at the grassroots level, emphasizing their contributions as crucial to progressing the game.

Additionally, he acknowledged the festival organizers for incorporating touch rugby into the weeklong carnival’s activities. Mau encouraged the public to come out and support the schools as they display their talents, with the hope that some of the players could represent Fiji in upcoming international competitions like the 2028 Touch World Cup and the 2031 Pacific Games.

The competition will continue today at Albert Park starting at 10 AM.

In the latest match results, John Wesley College defeated Queen Victoria School 4-1, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College triumphed over Lami High School with a score of 6-1, MGM secured a 4-1 victory against QVS, and Suva Grammar School drew with QVS.
