The independent investigation into harassment claims arising from the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has concluded. The results are currently under review by the Ministry of Local Government.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa confirmed that he cannot share further details about the findings at this time. He noted that the investigation included interviews with all relevant parties, such as committee members and witnesses, in accordance with council policies.
The investigation was carried out by an independent panel featuring the Chair of Suva City Council, an independent legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy group.
“We are dedicated to ensuring that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted competently, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards,” stated Mr. Nalumisa. He also mentioned that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.
Background details reveal that allegations of sexual harassment came to light after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of ‘groping’ being made. This incident allegedly took place during the post-crowning cocktail event in the festival’s VIP tent.
