An independent investigation into harassment allegations related to the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has concluded. The results are currently under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this update but did not provide further details regarding the findings.
Nalumisa emphasized that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, conducted according to council policies. The investigation was carried out by an independent panel, which included the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external specialist in event management and public safety, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.
“We are dedicated to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, following all legal and regulatory standards,” said Nalumisa. He added that a separate police investigation is still in progress, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement during this process.
Background on the case revealed that allegations of sexual harassment arose when a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable following claims of groping during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
