An independent investigation into harassment allegations that arose during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has been finalized. The results of this investigation are currently under review by the Ministry of Local Government.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this development but did not provide any further details regarding the findings. He did, however, reassure that the investigation included interviews with all relevant parties, such as committee members and witnesses, in accordance with council policies.
The investigation was carried out by an independent panel, which included the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.
“We are committed to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards,” stated Mr. Nalumisa. He added that a separate police investigation is currently underway, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout this process.
Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of ‘groping’ during a post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
