Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa is set to convene with officials from the Suva City Council and the Hibiscus Committee to address concerns that have emerged from the organization of the week-long festival. Public frustrations escalated following Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s appeal for the minister’s involvement, particularly after unsafe conditions led to a roof being blown off several stalls due to strong winds on the festival’s final day.

“I’ll be meeting with the Suva City Council special administrators this Wednesday to discuss all the issues at the Hibiscus Festival and will comment then,” Mr. Nalumisa stated.

During the festival’s closing, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the need for organizers to prioritize public safety. He urged all parties involved, including government agencies, municipal councils, and business operators, to stay alert regarding the safety and security of attendees.

Additionally, the Prime Minister expressed his disappointment over the Hibiscus Committee’s choice to halt a Drug Awareness march during the event. He found it troubling that representatives from Drug World Fiji were prohibited from distributing promotional materials and banners.

Social media users also voiced their dissatisfaction concerning the event’s live coverage, highlighting issues such as the limited stage time for contestants, which hindered the public’s ability to evaluate their performances effectively, alongside repetitive and minimal statements during media interviews.
