The independent investigation into harassment allegations that arose during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Carnival has been completed and submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for review.
Reportedly, a contestant at the Hibiscus festival experienced inappropriate contact on the night of the event, leading to an official police complaint being filed.
Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister responsible for Housing and Local Government, confirmed that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, in accordance with council policies.
Nalumisa noted that the investigation was carried out by an independent panel that included the chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety professional, and a representative from an organization focused on human rights or gender-based violence.
He emphasized their commitment to ensuring the investigation was fair, transparent, and adhered to all legal and regulatory standards. Additionally, he mentioned that a separate police investigation is currently ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement as the process unfolds.
