Hibiscus Carnival Harassment Probe: What’s the Next Step?

An independent investigation into harassment allegations from the 2024 Hibiscus Carnival crowning night has been finalized and submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for evaluation. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, stated that the investigation included interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, in accordance with Suva City Council policies.

The probe was conducted by an independent panel that consisted of the chair of Suva City Council, an independent legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from an organization advocating for human rights or against gender-based violence. Minister Nalumisa emphasized the commitment to conducting the investigation in an impartial, transparent, and professional manner while adhering to all legal and regulatory standards.

Additionally, he noted that a separate police investigation is also underway regarding the matter, with the ministry pledging full cooperation with law enforcement as the process advances.
