An independent investigation into harassment allegations from the Hibiscus Carnival crowning night has been completed and submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for evaluation. The inquiry was prompted by claims that a contestant was inappropriately touched, leading to an official police complaint.
Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister responsible for Housing and Local Government, confirmed that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, as per council policies.
The investigation was led by an independent panel, which included the chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external specialist in event management and public safety, and a representative from an organization focused on human rights or gender-based violence.
Nalumisa emphasized the commitment to conducting the investigation in an impartial, transparent, and professional manner, adhering to all legal and regulatory standards. He also noted that a separate police investigation is currently underway, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.
