Hibiscus Carnival: A Colorful Celebration of Youth and Community

The 1990 Hibiscus festivities kicked off with the vibrant “March of Youth,” a lively parade that filled the main streets of Suva with color and excitement. On August 20, 1990, The Fiji Times reported that thousands flocked to the city to take part in the Air New Zealand Hibiscus Carnival celebration.

At the forefront of the parade were the Fiji Police Band, accompanied by the Salvation Army and Fiji Military Forces bands. Schools from around the region, including RKS, QVS, and St John’s College from Ovalau, contributed to the atmosphere with their marching displays, while clowns added a playful flair to the event. This parade marked the festival’s official opening, with Air New Zealand’s general manager for Fiji, Robert Fullarton, participating to show the airline’s commitment to the carnival.

During a speech at Albert Park, Lord Mayor Paul Sloan emphasized the significant role of youth in shaping the future. “The Hibiscus Carnival is a time to have fun and enjoy a week of relaxation. Today’s youth must recognize and embrace the importance of their contributions to society, as they will be tomorrow’s leaders,” Mr. Sloan stated.

He also announced Holy Trinity as the best overall team, awarding them a $200 cash prize, with Ratu Kadavulevu School and St Anne’s School taking the positions of second and first runners-up, respectively.

The festivities continued with a lively lunchtime concert at Sukuna Park, followed by the first round of contestant judging at the Phoenix Theatre that evening. The day concluded with an inter-denominational service at Cruickshank Park and a Casino night at the Suva Travelodge.
