Hibiscus Carnival 1990: A Resilient Celebration Against the Odds

The Hibiscus Carnival of 1990 stands as a powerful testament to community spirit and resilience in challenging times. An article from The Fiji Times, dated August 27, 1990, recounted how the event persevered despite relentless rain and muddy conditions, showcasing a remarkable display of collective enthusiasm and camaraderie.

The carnival culminated in a float procession along Rodwell Road and Victoria Parade to Albert Park, marking a highlight of the week’s celebrations. Even as the weather deteriorated, creating mini-lakes and transforming the lush grass into a muddy landscape, public support was overwhelming. Tens of thousands braved the elements, forming a four-deep crowd along the main street to witness the festivities.

Participants demonstrated their dedication by enduring the rain armed with umbrellas and raincoats, reflecting a deep love for the carnival and its traditions. Earlier events, including the Military Tattoo and Fijian Night, had also been impacted by the heavy downpour, yet attendees remained generous and patient amid the wet conditions, sharing shelters and umbrellas with fellow festival-goers.

Logistical challenges abounded, with police managing both traffic and enthusiastic crowds, while the mud added a layer of difficulty to the experience. Nevertheless, carnival-goers showcased their resilience, returning to Albert Park in various types of footwear, from gumboots to high heels, and embracing the event with humor.

The carnival’s finale on Saturday saw a final influx of visitors eager to enjoy one last view of the floats and the crowning of the Hibiscus Queen. Despite the grim conditions, the joyous sense of community prevailed. Litia Dewa, crowned Hibiscus Queen, embodied the spirit of the carnival and the collaborative efforts of the community.

As the lights dimmed and the Ferris wheels halted, the enduring essence of the Hibiscus Carnival served as a symbol of community unity and strength, proving that the bond between the carnival and its supporters transcended the challenges posed by rain and mud.
