A seemingly ordinary Thursday evening turned into a heroic saga for a taxi driver in Suva, who found himself involved in a high-speed chase that ultimately led to the rescue of two frightened children. The dramatic events unfolded around 8 PM outside ANZ Bank on Victoria Parade during a police patrol.
The driver, opting for anonymity, recounted how he was drawn into the incident when he witnessed three men jump into a woman’s vehicle, unknowingly leaving her two young daughters in the backseat. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he began to pursue the stolen car.
As events escalated, a police officer, observing the driver’s determination, leaped into the moving taxi, and they chased the fleeing vehicle together. Despite having two passengers already in his taxi, the driver adeptly maneuvered through various streets, including Toorak and Ami Street, before cornering the perpetrators on Milverton Road.
The driver described the harrowing moment where he decided to confront the carjacker head-on, stating, “I had no choice but to hit it from the front to force him to stop.” After the thief attempted to escape by ramming his taxi, the chase intensified, but ultimately the culprits found themselves trapped in a dead-end.
With the car immobilized, the suspects abandoned it on foot, prompting the police officer to pursue them. Inside the car, the taxi driver found the two girls, visibly shaken and in tears. He comforted them, expressing concern for their well-being. “I was sad to see them like that,” he reflected.
In a moment of gratitude, the driver acknowledged the serendipity of his presence at that crucial time, saying, “I thank God for placing me there at the right time. When we’re able to help, it’s not by accident.” The 20-minute chase concluded successfully with the safe return of the children to their family.
