Taxi drivers in Suva demonstrated exceptional vigilance and teamwork in a recent incident involving the attempted theft of a vehicle with two young children inside. The event unfolded late last night when a 28-year-old mother experienced a minor accident on Victoria Parade. While she awaited police assistance, she inadvertently left her car keys in the ignition. An opportunistic man jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off with the woman’s two daughters sitting in the back.

Upon receiving an alert from the woman, the police quickly informed taxi operators in the vicinity about the stolen vehicle. Thanks to their Radio Transmitters (RT), news of the theft spread across the network swiftly. The stolen vehicle was eventually spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped to release the two girls safely from the car.

In a commendable act, a nearby taxi operator was able to intercept the car, allowing police sufficient time to respond and apprehend the suspect. However, the assailant put up resistance and assaulted four police officers before being taken into custody. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, praised the taxi drivers for their quick actions. “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime,” said ACP Driu.

In recognition of their timely intervention, a team from the Totogo Police Station is scheduled to meet with the taxi operators to thank them for their crucial role in resolving this dangerous situation.

This incident highlights the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety and combating crime. The quick response of the taxi operators not only safeguarded the children but also serves as an inspiring example of civilian action in the face of adversity.
