A typical Thursday evening turned into a heroic endeavor for a Suva taxidriver after he found himself involved in a high-speed chase that culminated in the rescue of two frightened children. The incident took place around 8 PM along Victoria Parade, near ANZ Bank, while a police patrol was underway.
The taxidriver, who chose to remain unnamed, recounted the intense moment when he observed three men jump into a woman’s vehicle, with her two young daughters still in the back seat. Noticing the alarming situation, he decided to act. “One of the police officers saw me giving chase and jumped into my moving taxi. We continued on the pursuit of the stolen vehicle together,” he shared.
Despite having two other passengers in his taxi, the driver skillfully navigated through several streets, including Toorak, Ami St, and Milverton Rd, while tailing the car. “When we reached Rewa St, the vehicle was still speeding, and we were fortunate that the roads were clear at that moment. I had to drive directly into it to force him to stop,” he explained.
The carjacker was not willing to concede easily and attempted to evade capture. However, the vehicle eventually became trapped in a dead-end street. “The suspect tried to ram my taxi, but I managed to block him in, preventing any escape,” the driver stated.
Once the vehicle was immobilized, the suspects fled on foot, with the police officer pursuing them. Inside the car, the taxidriver found the two girls, visibly distressed and in tears. “I tried to comfort them as they were scared. It was heartbreaking to witness their fear,” he commented.
Reflecting on the sequence of events, the driver expressed gratitude for being at the right place at the right time. “When we’re able to help, it’s not by accident,” he remarked.
The entire pursuit lasted approximately 20 minutes and concluded with the safe return of the children to their family. Police have commended the taxidriver for his courageous actions, acknowledging that his quick thinking helped prevent a potentially more tragic scenario.
