A dramatic incident unfolded in Suva on a Thursday evening, highlighting the courage of a local taxi driver who played a crucial role in rescuing two frightened children during a high-speed carjacking chase.
The events began around 8 pm near ANZ Bank on Victoria Parade, where the taxi driver, who chose to remain anonymous, witnessed three men forcibly enter a woman’s vehicle with her two young children still inside. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he promptly began to follow the fleeing car.
As he pursued the stolen vehicle, a police officer noticed the taxi driver chasing the suspects and jumped into the moving taxi to assist in the pursuit. With two passengers already in the cab, the driver navigated through various streets, including Toorak, Ami Street, and Brown Street, before the chase continued onto Milverton Road.
The brave cab driver recounted the heart-stopping moment when he decided to block the stolen vehicle by intentionally colliding with it. Despite the carjacker’s tries to escape by ramming into the taxi, the driver successfully immobilized the vehicle in a dead-end street.
As the suspects fled on foot, the driver discovered the two young girls in the back of the car, visibly shaken and in tears. He comforted them until the police arrived. Reflecting on the encounter, the driver expressed gratitude, believing he was in the right place at the right time to help prevent a potentially tragic situation.
The entire pursuit lasted approximately 20 minutes, concluding with the safe return of the children to their family. The local police commended the taxi driver’s quick thinking and bravery, emphasizing how his actions kept the situation from escalating further.
This incident serves as a reminder of the significant impact that quick thinking and courage can have in emergency situations. It also highlights the vital collaboration between the community and law enforcement in ensuring public safety.
