A routine Monday turned into a harrowing ordeal at Countdown supermarket in Dunedin when a man wielding two kitchen knives attacked, injuring four individuals, including both shoppers and staff. In the midst of chaos, 25-year-old Meli Balenivalu, an employee at the supermarket, displayed remarkable courage by rushing to help.
On May 10, 2021, upon hearing screams, Mr. Balenivalu sprinted towards the pharmacy aisle where he found his injured coworker and supervisor struggling against the assailant. Despite facing danger, he attempted to restrain the attacker. Though he was pushed aside and witnessed others being harmed, he remained focused on directing shoppers to safety, showcasing both valor and composure under pressure.
Thanks to Mr. Balenivalu and other brave individuals present that day, the attacker was eventually subdued and apprehended by police. His actions were formally recognized last week when the New Zealand Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet included him in the 2024 NZ Special Honours List for his bravery. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised Mr. Balenivalu and other recipients for their selfless acts during such a frightening day, highlighting the innate courage of New Zealanders.
Working presently in the mental health unit at Dunedin hospital, Mr. Balenivalu reflected on the events, sharing how the adrenaline and the thought of protecting his community drove him to act. He noted, “Honestly, there was no time to think. I just acted. That’s what us Polynesian people are known for.” He emphasized the significance of caring for one another, a testament to his culture’s spirit of community.
Despite facing emotional challenges following the incident, with support from his family being vital in processing the trauma, Mr. Balenivalu expressed gratitude for the outcome, relieved that no lives were lost. He encouraged vigilance in similar situations, highlighting the importance of assessing risks before intervening.
Mr. Balenivalu’s selfless actions serve as an inspiration for others to act heroically when needed. His humility about receiving the NZ Bravery Award adds to the poignant narrative of how ordinary individuals can step up during extraordinary times, embodying the essence of community spirit.
This story not only celebrates bravery but also reminds us of the impact individuals can have when they prioritize the safety and wellbeing of others, reinforcing the power of solidarity in facing adversity.
