A police constable from Nausori, Nirbhay Singh, exhibited remarkable bravery when he jumped into the Rewa River to rescue a woman who had leaped from a jetty. This heroic act, reminiscent of similar instances of police courage in Fiji, highlights the commitment of law enforcement to safeguarding their communities.
On the fateful day, at approximately 12:30 PM, Singh responded to a distressing situation relayed by a small boy, who informed him that someone was in trouble in the river. Without hesitation, Singh sprinted to the riverbank, about 100 meters away, where he spotted the woman’s head bobbing in the water. Demonstrating quick thinking, he pushed her panic-stricken mother aside and plunged into the 10-foot-deep water.
After successfully retrieving the woman, identified as Kala Wati, who had swallowed a substantial amount of water and lost consciousness, Singh administered first aid and cardiac massage, reviving her after approximately 15 minutes. A nearby schoolteacher stepped forward to assist, ensuring Kala was wrapped in a blanket and transported to Nausori Hospital for further care.
This act of valor echoes the recent commendations received by officers like Constable Iowane Baleicakau, who bravely rescued a child from a flooded home in Sawani. Both constables exemplify the core ideals of policing, which involve running towards danger to protect the community rather than fleeing from it. Their actions serve as a poignant reminder of the dedication and spirit of public service that police officers embody, often at significant personal risk.
Such stories not only uplift the community but also inspire others to act courageously in times of crisis. It reinforces the idea that every act of bravery counts, making a substantial difference in the lives of those in need.
