A typical Monday afternoon took a dire turn at Countdown supermarket in Dunedin when a man armed with two kitchen knives attacked, injuring four individuals, including staff and shoppers. However, 25-year-old Fijian Meli Balenivalu emerged as a remarkable hero during the crisis.
On May 10, 2021, as chaos erupted, Mr. Balenivalu, who was working at the supermarket, rushed to help. He found a seriously injured co-worker and bravely attempted to restrain the assailant. Despite being pushed aside and witnessing others get hurt, he kept his focus on directing shoppers to safety, showcasing extraordinary courage amidst the chaos.
The attacker was ultimately subdued by other shoppers before being taken into custody by police. Mr. Balenivalu’s quick actions played a crucial role in preventing further tragedy. His bravery did not go unnoticed; recently, he was included in the 2024 NZ Special Honours List by the New Zealand Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon recognized his actions as a testament to the selflessness that New Zealanders displayed during the attack.
During the ceremony, Mr. Luxon announced the conferral of three Bravery Stars, ten Bravery Decorations, and 25 Bravery Medals, with Mr. Balenivalu being among the honorees. The Prime Minister expressed his pride in the courage exhibited by ordinary people who stepped in to help during unprecedented danger.
