A seemingly ordinary Monday afternoon turned tragic when a violent attack occurred at Countdown supermarket in Dunedin, New Zealand. On May 10, 2021, a man armed with two kitchen knives injured four individuals, including both staff and patrons. Amidst the chaos, 25-year-old Fijian Meli Balenivalu took immediate action, showcasing remarkable bravery.
At the time of the incident, Mr. Balenivalu was working in the supermarket. Upon hearing screams, he rushed to the pharmacy aisle, where he found his colleague wounded and his supervisor, Dallas Wilson, trying to subdue the assailant. Without hesitation, he intervened to help restrain the attacker, even as he endured being pushed aside and witnessing others being harmed. Demonstrating leadership and composure under pressure, he directed frightened shoppers to safety.
The attack concluded with other bystanders successfully overpowering the assailant until police arrived. The quick actions of Mr. Balenivalu played a key role in preventing further injuries during the attack. He was subsequently honored in the 2024 NZ Special Honours List for his courageous response, receiving one of the 25 Bravery Medals presented by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
Mr. Luxon expressed pride in the selflessness demonstrated by ordinary citizens during such a frightening incident, emphasizing the dedication of those who put themselves at risk to help others. As Mr. Balenivalu reflects on the harrowing event—now working in the mental health unit at a Dunedin hospital—he credits his Polynesian heritage for the instinct to assist others.
He acknowledged the emotional toll following the incident but found comfort and support from his family. Grateful that no lives were lost, he shares a hopeful message about community and courage, encouraging others to be vigilant and to assess situations carefully while striving to assist when possible.
In a world where violent acts can spark fear within communities, Meli Balenivalu’s story serves as a powerful reminder of human resilience, the impact of collective support, and the importance of standing together in times of crisis. His bravery not only saved lives that day but also inspires others to act selflessly when faced with danger.
