Anaseini Vakacagicagi of Yavusa Maumi, based in Narocivo, Nayau, took on a significant role during last week’s installation of the new Tui Nayau. Entrusted with the creation of the Salasiga, a traditional crown-like headpiece made from softened masi, Anaseini embraced this family legacy, symbolizing her profound connection to her ancestry and culture.
“I’m confident to make it because I know my late grandmother made them,” Anaseini expressed, highlighting the proud lineage that connects her to the ceremonial crown. Her grandmother, who was the sister of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, the last Tui Nayau installed in 1969, had taught Anaseini the skill of crafting this vital cultural symbol.
The crafting of the Salasiga is not just a technical task but also a deep-seated family tradition filled with love and wisdom.
