Henry Puna, the former Prime Minister of the Cook Islands and Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, has been appointed as the interim director of the Pacific Islands Development Programme (PIDP) at the East-West Centre. This new role takes effect immediately, marking a significant achievement for Puna and the Cook Islands.

In a statement regarding this appointment, East-West Centre President Celeste Connors emphasized a renewed and expanded strategic focus on Pacific economic security, set to commence in 2026. “At the direction of our Board of Governors, the Centre will deepen and expand its longstanding work advancing economic security in the Pacific starting in 2026 and beyond,” Connors stated.

Puna’s appointment is noteworthy as he previously became the first Cook Islander to hold the position of secretary-general at the Pacific Islands Forum and was also appointed to the East-West Centre Board of Governors in 2024. Mark Brown, the current Prime Minister and leader of the Cook Islands Party, praised Puna’s selection, stating, “This is a terrific recognition of Henry’s regional statesmanship and a proud moment for the Cook Islands.” He expressed optimism about strengthening ties with the East-West Centre.

This development comes at a crucial time as the Pacific region garners increased global attention, with Puna’s leadership expected to navigate the Cook Islands through a pivotal period of economic and strategic engagement. The upcoming U.S. Investment Summit with Pacific Leaders, scheduled for February 22-24, aims to enhance U.S government and private sector involvement in the Pacific, underscoring the significance of PIDP in fostering regional collaboration.

“This next chapter is about action and implementation,” Connors stated, highlighting the Centre’s commitment to creating new avenues for investment and ensuring long-term resilience in the Pacific through trusted partnerships. Additionally, Makanani Salā has been appointed as the deputy director of PIDP, bringing valuable experience in regional conversations and policy engagement.

John Waiheʻe, the Board Chair, reiterated the importance of the Pacific in the Centre’s strategic focus, highlighting the region’s critical role in the Indo-Pacific’s future. Puna’s leadership is positioned to play a decisive role in shaping this future, with promising opportunities on the horizon for the Cook Islands and the broader Pacific community.
