In 2024, the 1560 Domestic Violence Helpline in Fiji handled nearly 1,000 calls, with notable spikes in January and November. The Ministry of Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation reported that 998 calls were made from January to December, reflecting an increase in awareness about domestic violence as a significant issue. January experienced the highest volume with 120 calls, while November also saw a considerable number at 96 calls.
Minister Sashi Kiran highlighted that the rise in calls corresponds with increased recognition of domestic violence, particularly during awareness campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which occurs annually from November 25 to December 10. The statistics reveal that among the 120 calls in January, 68 (56%) were directly related to domestic violence, alongside other inquiries concerning child abuse and sexual harassment.
The helpline has proven crucial, especially for women, who constituted the majority of callers with 842 females reaching out for assistance compared to 156 males. The government’s campaign to enhance visibility and provide support remains a priority, with plans for ongoing public information initiatives aimed at combating domestic and gender-based violence.
This situation mirrors ongoing discussions about the broader societal issues surrounding domestic violence in Fiji. Similarly, prior reports emphasize alarming trends, with a high percentage of women and children affected by such violence. Despite the concerning statistics, the commitment from both governmental and community leaders represents a hopeful step toward creating a safer environment for those in distress.
Individuals in need of assistance are encouraged to take advantage of the helpline, which is available 24/7, underscoring the message that help is within reach for anyone experiencing violence. By fostering community awareness around these critical issues, there is a clear pathway towards significant societal change and the promotion of respectful and safe relationships.
