Heleina Young is set to make a highly anticipated return to track and field at the South Pacific Mini Games in Palau after a six-year break spent playing rugby. The 24-year-old athlete, once a member of the Queensland Reds and the Fijiana sevens team, has bravely navigated significant challenges, including a knee injury that ultimately lifted her back to competition in her original sport.

Young’s journey back to athletics began during her rehabilitation, where she rediscovered her passion for running that she had missed while away from the track. With the dedicated guidance of her coach Bola Tafo’ou from the Laucala Club and the help of physiotherapist Isaiah Elder, she focused her rehabilitation on stabilizing her knee and gradually returning to more complex running movements.

Her hard work has certainly paid off, as she has shown remarkable improvement in running capabilities, expressing immense joy at being back in competitive form alongside brilliant young athletes, many of whom are within their teens and clocking impressive times. Young’s determination serves as a beacon of inspiration for many, especially in a sporting community that values resilience and tenacity.

The upcoming Mini Games serve as a perfect platform for Young to showcase not only her skills but also to inspire a new generation of athletes. This sense of hope is mirrored throughout Fiji’s athletics community, where there is a concerted effort among young athletes to overcome personal setbacks, as seen with her fellow competitors who have equally compelling stories of perseverance.

Young’s anticipated performance at the Mini Games, slated for June 29 to July 9, highlights the growing support and enthusiasm for sports in Fiji, illustrating how shared determination can lead to success both in competitions and in personal achievements. The stage is set for an inspiring display of athletic talent and a hopeful narrative for Fiji’s representation on an international level.
