Women sprinter Heleina Young is set to make a significant comeback at the Pacific Mini Games, taking place in Koror, Palau, from June 29 to July 9. After a six-year hiatus spent playing rugby, Young, under the coaching of Bola Tafoou, is eager to reclaim her spot in athletics.

Coach Tafoou highlighted the long road to recovery for Young, who faced numerous injuries while playing rugby. “This transition from rugby to athletics has been challenging but promising,” Tafoou mentioned. Young has focused her training on the 200m and 400m races, as her times in these events closely align with top competitors. Her decision to skip the 100m event was strategic, allowing her to optimize her performance in the longer sprints.

Young has shown resilience and strong leadership skills, especially as one of the more experienced athletes on the team. Tafoou noted, “She knows her responsibilities and is setting a positive example for younger athletes.” Following a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that sidelined her, Young’s progress in recovery has been encouraging, enabling her to regain strength and speed.

The financial aspects of attending the Games pose challenges for athletes like Young, as participating federations face levies that can reach up to $3,000 per person. Tafoou expressed the need for more sponsorship support to alleviate these financial burdens, especially with the upcoming Tahiti Pacific Games on the horizon.

Young’s journey back to sports serves as an inspiring narrative not only for herself but for many in Fiji’s athletic community, emphasizing the importance of resilience and determination. Her commitment to competing and her role as a mentor to less experienced athletes reflect a broader hope for the future of Fijian athletics.

Overall, as preparations intensify for the Pacific Mini Games, Young’s story resonates with many aspiring athletes in Fiji, signaling a bright future filled with potential and success for the nation’s representation on the international stage.
