Heleina Young, a prominent figure in Fijian athletics, is preparing to return to the track at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau, from June 29 to July 9. Having previously dominated the sport, Young’s journey back to sprinting comes after a six-year hiatus spent playing rugby. Her time in rugby included stints with the Queensland Reds and the Fijiana sevens team. She faced significant challenges during this transition, including a knee injury that required extensive rehabilitation and showed her determination and resilience.

Under the coaching of Bola Tafo’ou, Young rediscovered her passion for running and is excited about competing in the 200m, 400m, and relay events. Her personal best times pre-return stand out: 12.37 seconds for the 100m, 25.13 seconds for the 200m, and 55.50 seconds for the 400m. Young already made a mark on the Pacific Games in 2019, where she achieved four medals, including a gold in the 4x100m relay and silvers in the 100m, 200m, and 4x400m relay events.

Heleina’s experience and speed have transformed her into one of the leading female sprinters in Fiji, following inspiration from legends such as Makelesi Bulikiobo and Vaciseva Tavaga. Her anticipated performance at the games is not just a personal comeback but also a beacon of hope for younger athletes in Fiji. Young stands as a role model, demonstrating that persistence and hard work can lead to remarkable comebacks.

Moreover, her return to athletics reflects a growing trend of resilience in Fiji’s athletic community. Athletes like Melania Turaga and Glandness Simpson are also poised to compete, embodying a spirit of determination that resonates widely. As the nation gears up for the games, there is an overarching sense of excitement and unity, highlighting the potential for success on the international stage.

Overall, Young’s journey illustrates not only her personal resolve but also serves as a source of inspiration for younger generations, sparking a hopeful narrative within Fijian athletics as the community rallies around its athletes. The Pacific Mini Games offer a crucial platform for showcasing not just individual talents but the collective spirit of perseverance that defines Fijian sports.
