Police are currently on high alert across the Western Division as they prepare for potential evacuations due to heavy rain affecting low-lying areas, according to Divisional Police Commander West, SSP Iakobo Vaisewa. He emphasized the importance of public safety and urged residents to take necessary precautions as many crossings and waterways have become submerged due to floodwaters.
“We are actively monitoring the weather and our response will be contingent upon the situation. We have a dedicated team on standby in every district,” SSP Vaisewa stated. This preparedness is part of their strategic planning for natural disasters.
Furthermore, Vaisewa stressed the need for parents to keep a close eye on their children during this time. He warned against allowing kids to engage in swimming or play near drains, highlighting the risks associated with rising water levels. “It’s critical for parents to prioritize the safety of their children,” he added.
On another note, Divisional Commissioner West, Apolosi Lewaqai, reported that as of yesterday, no evacuation centers have been established, indicating that authorities are monitoring the situation closely and responding as necessary.
This proactive approach by law enforcement and local authorities reflects a commitment to ensuring community safety amid challenging weather conditions. Such vigilance and preparedness can significantly mitigate risks associated with natural disasters, fostering a sense of security within the community.
