Weather Update
Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 3:30 PM on Monday, January 27, 2025
Hello, weather warriors! It appears that our good old friend, Mr. Rain, has decided to overstay his welcome. The Northern Division, Yasawa, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups, along with the eastern half of Viti Levu, are in for a drenching! So grab your umbrellas and perhaps a rubber duck, because heavy rain is in the forecast.
But wait, there’s more! A flash flood alert is also waving its red flag for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Vanua Levu and the eastern half of Viti Levu—basically, from Sigatoka through to Navua and Rakiraki. You know what they say in Fiji: “When it rains, it pours!” And today is no exception.
Our trusty atmospheric overachiever, a trough of low pressure, is busy making sure we have plenty of clouds and rain in the coming days, while the breezy east to northeast winds are doing their best impression of a gentle breeze—just wait till they turn northerly tomorrow to spice things up a bit.
As for the forecast until midnight, expect a symphony of occasional rains, heavy at times, with a few rumbles of thunder to keep the dogs barking! Localized heavy falls might throw a mini water party in the already flood-prone areas, so keep an eye out for those swift little streams turning into raging rivers.
Here’s what we see on the radar for Wednesday: More rain (surprise, surprise), heavy at times, along with a few thunderstorms. Our weather gurus predict moderate to fresh winds that may get a little gusty during those special heavy rain moments. Seas? They’ll be moderate to rough, giving your boats a good workout.
City by City Quick Rundown:
Navua / Suva / Nausori: Grab your galoshes; it’s going to be rain, rain, and more rain with potential thunderstorms.
Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Rainy vibes on the schedule, so maybe you save the beach day for another time?
Sigatoka/Coral Coast: More of the same—it’s a rain extravaganza with thunderstorms sprinkled in.
Tavua/Rakiraki: Don’t forget your umbrella, as the forecast calls for occasional rain and cheeky thunderstorms.
Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Similar raucousness ahead; no escaping the rain and thunder here.
Labasa: Showers and storms gallore; make sure your rain dance is delivered on point.
Savusavu: Expect another soaking with some intermittent thunder to accompany the raindrops.
Lau and Lomaiviti group: More rain to remind you just how much those trees appreciate their hydration!
Kadavu: One word: rain. It’ll probably be the same story as above.
Rotuma: A different melody with partly cloudy skies and some showers. Tomorrow might bring a friend or two in the form of isolated thunderstorms.
So, fellow Fijians, stir up your hot chocolate and tour your local puddles—just outsmart those flash floods, and let’s hope our beloved Mr. Rain takes a vacation soon!
