Weather Update
Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 7:30pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
Hold onto your umbrellas, folks, because a heavy rain alert is still hanging around like an uninvited guest for the eastern half of Viti Levu! We’re talking everywhere from Serua/Namosi, through Navua and Nausori, to Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Ra, as well as in Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Lau, Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu, and those oh-so-tiny nearby islands. You can find more details by swinging by https://www.met.gov.fj/index.php?page=warn#20014.txt, if you want to be in the know…or just want to feel like a meteorologist.
What’s happening? A lazy trough of low pressure is slowly drifting away from Fiji, much like a sloth after a big lunch. But hold your horses – another trough is expected to make its entrance from the west come Monday. Expect some cloud cover and showers that will keep things interesting for the next few days.
The forecast until midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group is filled with excitement: expect occasional rain – heavy at times – and even a few thunderstorms over Lau and Lomaiviti. The rain might slowly calm down to just showers tomorrow, but let’s not make any promises!
The eastern half of Viti Levu (from Serua/Namosi to Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Ra), along with Kadavu and the smaller islands, should also prepare for showers and thunderstorms that may dump some serious rain. If you’re somewhere else, you might enjoy some fine weather…until the afternoon or evening, when those sneaky showers may pop in unannounced!
Heads up for flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas – it seems the rain really loves some drama. It’s like the weather has a flair for the theatrical. Expect moderate easterly winds that might get a little gusty during the downpours, and seas that are, let’s say, moderate.
Looking ahead to Monday: Be ready for a continuation of occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly over Lau, Lomaiviti, and the eastern half of Viti Levu. Grab your raincoat! For Navua, Suva, and Nausori: expect somewhat disrespectful showers and heavy thunderstorms.
For the fabulous folks in Nadi, Lautoka, and Ba: enjoy the fine weather until afternoon or evening when storms might crash the party. Sigatoka/Coral Coast? Same deal – the afternoon might not be quite as friendly.
In Tavua/Rakiraki, get ready for some occasional showers and thunderstorms. The Yasawa/Mamanuca group looks like it can maintain its cool, but afternoon storms are not entirely out of the question.
Labasa will experience a cloudy party with some brief shower interruptions. Savusavu? It’s the same old story: occasional showers and thunderstorms making a grand entrance.
In Lau and Lomaiviti, expect heavy rain at times with a few thunderclaps, gradually easing tomorrow. And our island friend Rotuma? It’s cloudy with brief showers and possible afternoon thunderstorms. Moderate easterly winds are expected, so don’t set your kites just yet!
Stay dry, stay safe, and keep your sense of humor, because we’re in for a splashy few days!
