Heavy Rain Alert Extended Across Fiji: Expected Thunderstorms and Flash Flooding

Weather Update

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 10:45 am on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Attention, folks! Grab your umbrellas and swim gear because a HEAVY RAIN ALERT is still doing the cha-cha across Kadavu, the Moala Group, Southern Lau, the Western Division (including its not-so-exciting interior), and now the rest of Fiji has joined the wet party!

What’s cooking? A sluggish trough of low pressure is sitting comfortably over the southern parts of Fiji, serving up cloudy skies and occasional rain as it enhances our lovely northwesterly winds. It seems like Mother Nature is feeling a bit dramatic today with all the rain and thunder!

Here’s what to expect until midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group:

For Kadavu, Moala Group, and Southern Lau:
Occasional rain, heavy at times, possibly accompanied by a few thunderstorms just to spice things up a bit.

For the Interior of Viti Levu, all the way from Sigatoka to Navua, creeping up to Suva and Tailevu North, plus the interior and southern parts of Vanua Levu:
Get ready for cloudy periods with showers that will graciously increase to rain. Expect this to become frequent by the afternoon or evening! And yes, we might even see some lightning grace the stage.

For the rest of Fiji:
Expect occasional rain with a chance of isolated heavy showers that might bring their thunder buddies along. Localized heavy falls could lead to some spontaneous flash flooding in low-lying areas, so keep those water wings handy!

Winds will be moderate from the northwest, gusty during heavy falls, as if to remind us who’s boss. The seas? Well, they’re rather moderate but can turn a bit rough when squalls join the fun.

Outlook for Sunday: Expect periods of rain with heavy moments and a sprinkle of thunderstorms dancing around Kadavu, the Western Division, and its not-so-happy interior. Elsewhere, occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms will keep crashing the party.

For Navua / Suva / Nausori:
Cloudier than a teenager’s mood swings with increasing showers, turning into frequent rain by afternoon or evening. Isolated thunderstorms might join the drama!

For Nadi / Lautoka / Ba:
Occasional rain is on the menu, with isolated heavy falls lurking about. Don’t be surprised if a thunderstorm drops by unannounced.

For Sigatoka/Coral Coast:
Cloudy vibes with increasing showers, transforming into a more frequent rain fest by later in the day!

For Tavua / Rakiraki:
Get ready for some occasional rain alongside isolated heavy patches and thunder, just for kicks.

For Yasawa/Mamanuca group:
More of a rain romp with isolated heavy falls and a potential thunderstorm cameo.

For Labasa:
It’s rain time! Expect occasional showers, isolated heavy falls, and a thunderous applause in the background.

For Savusavu:
Consider this your rainy season starter kit! Cloudy periods followed by showers, ramping up to frequent rain in the afternoon or evening.

For Lau/Lomaiviti:
Occasional rain is coming your way, heavy at times with an assortment of thunderstorms.

For Kadavu:
Just like the others, expect occasional rain, heavy at times with the chance of a thunderstorm.

For Rotuma:
A load of cloud and rain to brighten your day, with gusty winds and rough seas showing off.

Outlook for Sunday for Rotuma: More of the same! Occasional heavy rain and a sprinkle of thunderstorms should keep things interesting.

So, pack your patience along with that umbrella; it looks like a wet weekend ahead!
