Weather Update

Good morning, everyone! It’s your favorite meteorological forecast here, straight from the weather wizards at the National Weather Forecasting Centre. Buckle up, because Mother Nature is putting on a show today!

As we begin this 17th of January, 2026, we find ourselves in a soggy situation. A hefty rain alert is draped over the northern and eastern parts of our beautiful Fiji group. Think of it as Mother Nature’s way of giving us a free shower, but let’s be honest—it’s a bit too generous!

Currently, there’s a mischievous trough of low pressure making itself at home, bringing along some uninvited clouds and rain to the northern and eastern regions. On top of that, a moist wind is blowing in from the north and northwest, so if you were hoping for a dry hair day, you might want to rethink those plans!

Looking ahead to midnight tonight across Fiji, expect occasional rain and the possibility of a few thunderstorms over Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and those smaller nearby islands like Lau and the Lomaiviti group. It seems the rain will ease to showers later today—think of it as the clouds taking a breather.

In Nadi-Lautoka-Ba-Tavua-Rakiraki, we’re looking at cloudy periods mixed with some showers, almost like undercooked cake layers—soft but not quite right! Elsewhere, a sprinkle of fine weather will make a surprise appearance, but be ready for afternoon or evening thunderstorms complete with heavy rainfall. Those localized heavy falls could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas, reminding us that sometimes our rivers and streams enjoy a little too much rain!

The winds? They’ll be moderate to fresh, and the seas? Moderately to rough—so if you were planning a leisurely swim, you may want to embrace your inner mermaid and skip it for now!

Now, what does tomorrow hold in store for us? Clouds and showers will keep their comical company in Nadi-Lautoka-Ba-Tavua-Rakiraki, with temperatures cozying up between 24 and 31 degrees. Over in Navua, Suva, and Nausori, enjoy fine weather—until the afternoon when those sneaky showers and thunderstorms decide to crash the party!

For those in Labasa and Savusavu, expect occasional rain and thunderstorms. Just think of it as a drama unfolding right in your backyard—nature is definitely the new soap opera star!

And for Rotuma, a similar storyline of rain and thunderstorms is in the works, adding a touch of excitement to your weekend plans.

So grab your umbrellas, put on your brightest galoshes, and maybe have a indoor picnic—because for today, it’s all about riding out the rain clouds with a smile. Enjoy the weather, whatever it might bring!
