Heartfelt Victory: Marist Brothers U15 Team Rallies for Late Coach

The under-15 team from Marist Brothers High School had a significant motivation heading into the semi-finals of the Vodafone Super Deans tournament. The team aimed for victory, particularly for their vice-captain and number 8, Senitiki Kuruvadua, who recently lost his father.

Kuruvadua played a pivotal role in securing a 22-7 victory against Gospel High School in the semifinals. Despite the emotional turmoil from his loss, he managed to maintain his composure throughout the match.

“I’ve just lost my father recently. He had kidney failure, and being here wasn’t easy knowing that all the plans for the funeral are being held at home,” he shared. “It wasn’t easy because I was close to my father, but I want to thank God for giving me the strength to play this week and for the opportunity to be part of this team.”

Tevita Kuruvadua, Senitiki’s father, was a devoted supporter of his rugby aspirations. “He was my number one fan, and I really miss him,” Senitiki expressed. “I tried to be strong for my teammates as I am the vice-captain, and I did not want to let them down. I wanted to show them that I am a strong man, and everything that happens is the will of God.”

To honor his father, the team wore black armbands as a gesture of support. “The message in the changing room was that we are all playing for my dad, for our parents who have supported us, for our coaches, trainers, and managers for their commitment to our training, and for ourselves. My dad would have told me to play for my team, my family at home, to give my very best, and enjoy the game.”

Marist Brothers High School, led by Kuruvadua, will face Suva Grammar School in the final next weekend.
