Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from Fijians around the world after a car accident incident that gained considerable attention online.
The event took place on October 18 at approximately 7:55 pm, when Mr. Toga, a resident of Barotu, Saivou, Ra, reportedly collided with the vehicle of Bhavik Verma in Narere, Nasinu. Mr. Verma, in his early twenties, recorded a video showing Mr. Toga’s sincere apology and willingness to compensate for the damages, which quickly went viral.
In the video, Mr. Toga appeared unaware that he was being filmed, as he humbly clasped his hands and expressed regret over the incident. During their conversation, Mr. Verma asked for a payment of $500, while Mr. Toga assessed the damages as minor and offered $200 instead. Ultimately, he paid $100 upfront, with plans to pay the remaining amount the following day.
The public’s reaction to the video was heartfelt, leading to an influx of financial support for Mr. Toga. As of November 12, he had received $3,347.38 through M-Paisa transfers from generous Fijians worldwide, reflecting the kindness of his fellow countrymen. In his own words, Mr. Toga expressed gratitude to supporters from places such as the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, emphasizing that their compassion showed that love can overcome any challenge.
However, the incident has not been without its challenges. Following the video’s release, reports surfaced of alleged threats directed at Mr. Verma’s family via social media. Mr. Toga appealed for forgiveness, stressing that violence is not a solution, and he has filed a police report regarding the threats, although he has yet to receive a response from the police.
Mr. Verma clarified that his intention in sharing the video was merely to identify Mr. Toga, although he felt that the situation escalated beyond his control. He claims to have attempted to reach out to Mr. Toga but did not receive any replies.
In light of the situation, Sanjay, Mr. Verma’s father, has expressed concern for their safety, requesting increased police patrols in their neighborhood due to the threats received. Moreover, individuals like Dinesh Lal and mechanic Deo Kumar have stepped forward to offer both financial aid and services, showcasing the broader community’s support for Mr. Toga during this difficult time.
Despite considering legal action for defamation against Mr. Verma, Mr. Toga plans to temporarily withhold the final $100 payment until the situation is resolved. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful and touched by the kindness shown by his fellow Fijians amidst adversity. The Land Transport Authority has also highlighted the importance of their “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign, reinforcing safe driving practices, especially during festive seasons.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of solidarity and compassion within the community, emphasizing that even in challenging times, kindness can prevail and unite people for a common cause.
