Kusum Lata, a 61-year-old resident of Natabua, has become a beacon of hope for Fijians as she successfully underwent the first open-heart surgery at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi. The procedure, a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), was conducted by a specialized team of Cardio Thoracic surgeons and was completed without any complications.

After experiencing severe chest pains and a minor heart attack earlier this year, Mrs. Lata faced the daunting prospect of undergoing surgery abroad, with costs quoted at around $50,000 to travel to India. “I never imagined I could have such surgery done in Fiji. I am feeling a lot better and have had no issues with the surgery,” expressed Mrs. Lata, who was discharged just four days post-operation.
