A family’s holiday dreams took a tragic turn when a fire devastated their home in Navua on Saturday, leaving widow Tara Wati, 58, and her visually impaired daughter without shelter. The fire destroyed two flats and a three-bedroom house, which had an estimated value of $70,000.

Tara Wati was in town shopping with her daughter, Devika Nandani, when she received the distressing news from a taxi driver about the fire. At the time, her son was working in Suva. Tara emphasized her usual care for safety measures, stating she had turned off nearly all electrical appliances before leaving for the day. Despite her precautions, the blaze consumed their home so quickly that they could not salvage any belongings upon their return.

“I lost all my belongings and my son’s vehicle in the fire. We’re now only left with what we are wearing,” Tara lamented. The family’s hopes for a joyous Christmas celebration have been dashed as they now face uncertainty regarding their future.

Fortunately, a neighboring family has offered temporary shelter as they navigate this difficult situation. Tara is actively seeking help to construct a temporary home at the site of their former residence.

While this unfortunate event has disrupted their holiday plans, the community’s support may provide a glimmer of hope for Tara and her family. With assistance, they can begin to rebuild and create a new chapter in their lives, demonstrating resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
