A heartbroken mother from Qelewaqa, Labasa, is calling for justice following the tragic death of her son, 38-year-old fisherman Magnesh Reddy, who lost his life in a road accident on Monday evening along the Wailevu stretch. The mother, aged 64, shared her anguish, recalling their last moments together filled with love and companionship.
Magnesh had left home earlier that morning as part of his daily routine to deliver fish to town, marking the last time his mother heard his voice. When she received the devastating news of the accident, she rushed barefoot along a dark gravel road, filled with desperation to reach her son. Tragically, by the time she arrived, it was too late; witnesses informed her that he had been trapped beneath the vehicle involved in the accident. Due to the circumstances, she was unable to see her son’s body, as authorities had already taken him to the hospital.
Now mourning her loss, the mother is seeking justice, realizing her beloved son will not return. In response to the incident, local police have confirmed that an investigation is underway. They are also urging both drivers and pedestrians to exercise increased caution as the festive season approaches, which historically sees a rise in road accidents. This incident is reminiscent of other fatal accidents along the same stretch, prompting community concerns regarding road safety in the area.
While the situation is profoundly tragic, there is hope that increased awareness and vigilance could prevent future incidents, offering a path towards greater safety for all road users.
