The Fiji National University (FNU) has shared its deep sorrow regarding the discovery of a baby boy found inside a toilet at its Natabua campus. This incident has prompted FNU to fully cooperate with the Fiji Police Force as investigations continue.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Nii-K Plange described the discovery as “heartbreaking and deeply emotional.” He expressed concern for the mother, urging her to seek the support she may need, emphasizing that she is not alone and that FNU is prepared to provide assistance if she reaches out.

“We extend our hearts to the innocent child and mother, praying they receive the love, care, and protection they deserve,” Professor Plange remarked. He acknowledged the quick and compassionate actions of those who responded to the situation, demonstrating the university’s commitment to duty of care.

The university is currently reflecting on how to enhance support for its students, with a focus on ensuring that no one feels isolated while facing difficult life circumstances. FNU encourages students to utilize the free, confidential counseling and health services available across its campuses, including the UniClinic, and to confide in trusted staff members if they are in need.

Professor Plange reassured students that help is available for anyone struggling emotionally, mentally, or personally, reiterating the training and resources provided by UniClinic staff and counselors to offer support without judgment.

This incident echoes ongoing discussions in the community about the importance of addressing social support for vulnerable individuals, particularly in light of similar past tragedies concerning abandoned infants that have raised awareness about child welfare. The community’s swift response and support can create a foundation for better systems to help those in crisis, aiming to foster a secure environment for all children.

Through collective efforts, there is hope that the community can work together to provide the necessary support to protect vulnerable members and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
