Ilona Valette’s first visit to Fiji was marked by heartbreak, as she traveled to lay to rest her partner, Josaia Raisuqe, a 30-year-old rugby star who tragically died in an accident earlier this month while heading to training. The couple had spent the last four years together in France, nurturing dreams for their future, including plans for building a home.

Reflecting on their life together, Ilona expressed, “This is my first time in Fiji. I never thought I would come here like this.” Their relationship was filled with joy and laughter, and Ilona described every moment with Josaia as a cherished memory. “He made me laugh all the time. Being with him was happiness. He was always full of love,” she said.

Josaia Raisuqe, who played for Castres Olympique and was a former Olympic silver medalist for Fiji, lost his life after being struck by a train at a level crossing. His parents, Tevita and Mereani, are traveling to France to honor their son and are grateful for the support received from the rugby community during this difficult time.

The grief from Josaia’s passing reaches beyond his family, sending shockwaves throughout the Fijian rugby community, which is still mourning the loss of another promising young player, Sekove Tagicakiverata. His untimely death underscores the fragility of life but also highlights the bonds formed through shared experiences within the sport. Numerous tributes have poured in from players and teammates, reflecting on Josaia’s positive impact on and off the pitch.

His funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday at his village in Lutu, Wainibuka, where the community will gather to remember the joy and love he brought into their lives.

As difficult as this moment is, it is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy that athletes like Josaia Raisuqe leave behind, inspiring future generations through their passion and commitment to both sport and community. The rugby world stands united in remembering a vibrant spirit taken too soon, finding solace in shared love and memories that will forever illuminate the lives of many.
