Setareki Turagacoke, the youngest member of the Flying Fijians rugby team, experienced a heartbreaking loss as he began 2024. The 19-year-old tragically lost his mother, Vani Ranavue, after a brief illness last Saturday. Turagacoke, who made his international debut against Spain on November 17, 2023, expressed his profound grief, noting that his mother had always been his greatest supporter.

Currently in France, Turagacoke reminisced about the pride his mother felt upon learning of his achievement in rugby. “When I informed her of my Flying Fijian debut, she cried and told me that I have finally achieved my dreams,” he shared. Unfortunately, the news of her passing reached him just a few days ago, leaving him with cherished memories and heartfelt advice she imparted on game days – to enjoy the game, maintain faith, and trust himself.

Hailing from Dakuinuku village in Tailevu, Turagacoke disclosed that his mother concealed her illness from him and his siblings. Her untimely passing is especially heartbreaking for her four children, who are left without their mother’s guidance. “If I had the chance to say goodbye, I would’ve thanked her for raising us,” Turagacoke expressed, acknowledging the sacrifices she made.

In her absence, Turagacoke, along with his older brother, plans to continue supporting their younger siblings and fulfill the role their mother played. He emphasizes the importance of cherishing family time, urging other youth to strengthen their relationships with parents, as life’s unpredictability remains unchanged.

Despite this significant loss, Turagacoke’s rugby journey continues. He played a pivotal role in Fiji’s victory against Spain, scoring a crucial try, and secured a place in subsequent matches, including a challenging game against Ireland. He has also begun to make his mark with the Stade Francais Paris Rugby team in France’s Top 14 and Champions Cup competitions.

This story is a poignant reminder of resilience in the face of tragedy. Turagacoke’s ability to persevere in his sporting career while coping with personal loss highlights the strength of community and familial bonds, leaving a hopeful message for others to cherish their loved ones while they can.
