Former Fiji 7s rugby captain Setefano Cakaunivalu, widely recognized as Setefano Cakau, experienced a heart attack on Friday and is currently hospitalized. The 46-year-old player was participating in a fixture for South Darwin against Casuarina at Skyring Rugby Park in Northern Territory, Australia, when he suddenly collapsed.

Following the conclusion of the match, Cakaunivalu made his way to South Darwin’s Warren Park clubhouse on foot, but moments later, he suffered the suspected heart attack. Quick actions from local community members led to immediate CPR, and emergency services were subsequently alerted to the situation.

Cakaunivalu was then transported to the Royal Darwin Hospital, where he is reported to be in serious but stable condition. The Northern Territory Rugby community has reached out to the public, asking for respect regarding Cakaunivalu’s privacy during this difficult time. A GoFundMe page is being set up to support him and his family in light of this emergency.

This incident echoes concerns within the rugby community regarding health issues experienced by players, particularly given the recent passing of another Fiji rugby player, Sekove Tagicakiverata, just a few days ago due to unknown causes after he was hospitalized in Japan. Both Cakaunivalu and Tagicakiverata’s situations have stirred conversations about the physical and emotional strains athletes face, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness and health monitoring in sports.

As Cakaunivalu continues to recover, the hope remains strong that he will emerge from this health scare and return to do what he loves. The rugby community stands united, sending their thoughts and prayers for a quick and complete recovery for Cakaunivalu.
