Hearing Health Crisis: Are We Ignoring Our Ears?

Many people fail to understand the importance of ear care, according to Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist with Hearing Aid Services in Australia. In a recent two-day screening event held at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, he examined 40 patients, ranging from a four-year-old to an 80-year-old.

Mr. Mohammed identified common issues among the patients, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, and blockages caused by earwax. He highlighted a concerning lack of local audiometrists in the North, stating that many patients must travel to Suva for medical advice. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will send an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa at least once a month to provide necessary care.

Emphasizing the emotional impact of hearing loss, he recounted a touching encounter with a female patient who, after receiving a hearing aid, was overcome with joy as she began to hear once more. His visit also included assessments of students from the Labasa School for Special Education, many of whom require urgent medical attention and hearing aids.

Before the pandemic, Mr. Mohammed had participated in similar initiatives organized by the Lions Club Labasa, and he expressed a desire to fundraise to help children with hearing issues receive treatment overseas. He poignantly noted that life without the ability to hear is profoundly isolating and that increased awareness around ear health is crucial.

Positive change seems possible as awareness grows, and with collaborative community efforts, more individuals may receive the essential treatment they need, allowing them to lead fuller lives.

Hope remains strong that with dedicated advocacy and resources, the issue of hearing impairment can be effectively addressed, fostering a society where everyone has the chance to communicate and thrive.
