In a recent outreach initiative in Labasa Town, Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Australia with Hearing Aid Services, emphasized the importance of ear health. Over two days, he screened 40 patients, ranging from four to 80 years old, noting that many suffered from common ear issues including perforated eardrums, infections, and excessive earwax.

Mohammed pointed out the lack of audiometrists in the Northern regions of Fiji, stating that patients often travel to Suva for medical assistance. He advocated for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to send an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly to provide essential care for local residents.

One poignant moment in Mohammed’s visit involved a female patient with hearing impairment. After receiving treatment and a hearing aid, her emotional reaction was overwhelming, illustrating the significant impact of proper ear care. He also worked with students from the Labasa School for Special Education, where many faced urgent hearing issues.

Reflecting on his experience, Mohammed expressed a desire for increased community support to facilitate medical trips overseas for children in need of specialized treatment. He recognized the profound challenge that hearing loss poses to communication and daily life, reinforcing the need for greater awareness about ear health.

This initiative opens pathways for improvement in local healthcare services and inspires hope for those living with hearing challenges. Increased awareness and resources could lead to better outcomes for individuals in dire need, ultimately fostering a more inclusive community.
