Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia, emphasized the importance of ear care during a recent screening event in Labasa Town, where he provided assistance to 40 patients ranging from a four-year-old to an 80-year-old. He noted that many of these individuals were experiencing various ear issues, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, blockages from earwax, scar tissue, and discharge problems due to inadequate cleaning.

During his time in Labasa, Mohammed observed a significant need for increased awareness and accessibility to hearing care services in northern regions. He highlighted that residents often need to travel to Suva for medical advice, as there are no audiometrists available in the area. He expressed a desire for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to regularly send Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists to Labasa to provide necessary care.

One particularly moving moment occurred when a female patient with hearing impairment responded positively to a hearing aid, bringing both her and Mohammed to tears of joy. He also treated students from Labasa School for Special Education, many of whom require immediate attention and hearing aids.

Mr. Mohammed hopes to collaborate with community organizations, such as the Lions Club of Labasa, to raise funds for children in need of urgent medical intervention, possibly even facilitating treatment overseas as has been done in the past. He stressed the importance of hearing in daily life, noting that the lack of it can severely impact communication and quality of life.

Comment: This article sheds light on the pressing issue of hearing care in underserved areas. Greater awareness and resources are essential for improving the standard of living for those affected.
