Hearing Health Crisis: A Call for Awareness and Action in Labasa

Hearing Aid Services (HAS) consultant audiometrist Nasif Mohammed from Australia recently conducted ear health screenings in Labasa Town, Australia, witnessing firsthand the critical need for ear care awareness. Over the course of two days, he attended to 40 patients ranging from a four-year-old child to an 80-year-old senior citizen.

During these screenings, Mohammed found that many patients were suffering from various conditions due to improper ear care, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, and excessive earwax buildup, as well as complications stemming from scar tissue and discharge that they could not manage properly.

He noted a significant gap in audiometric services in the northern region, stating, “I have been told that there is no audiometrist in the North, and patients who need medical advice must travel to Suva.” Mohammed expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services could consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly to provide much-needed medical assistance to residents.

One poignant moment during his screenings involved a female patient with hearing impairment who, after receiving treatment, was overcome with emotion as she experienced the joy of hearing once again through the use of a hearing aid. He also identified students from the Labasa School for Special Education who required immediate medical attention and hearing aids.

Reflecting on the importance of ear health, Mohammed emphasized the challenges faced by individuals who are unable to hear, saying, “Imagine living a life without the ability to hear and communicate. It is crucial for us to raise awareness about ear health.” He also highlighted the potential for collaboration to support children in need, suggesting that fundraising efforts could facilitate overseas treatment opportunities similar to those organized prior to the pandemic by the Lions Club Labasa.

Overall, Mohammed’s visit serves as a critical reminder of the importance of ear health and the need for accessible medical services in the community.

In summary, this initiative underscores the importance of awareness and support for ear health, particularly in under-served regions. It presents an opportunity for collaborative efforts to enhance the lives of those with hearing challenges, ensuring they receive the care and attention they require to lead fulfilling lives.
