Hearing Health: Are We Ignoring the Signs?

Many people overlook the importance of ear care, according to Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist with Hearing Aid Services in Australia. During a recent two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, he examined 40 patients ranging from a four-year-old to an 80-year-old.

Mr. Mohammed noted that most patients suffered from ear mismanagement issues, such as perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals due to wax buildup, and other complications. He emphasized that there is currently no audiometrist available in Northern Fiji, compelling residents to travel to Suva for medical assistance.

He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will consider sending an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly to provide much-needed support to the community. One poignant moment during his visit involved a woman suffering from hearing impairment, who expressed her deep emotional struggle prior to receiving a hearing aid. The joy she experienced upon hearing voices again was a testament to the transformative power of such treatments.

Additionally, students at the Labasa School for Special Education were among those requiring urgent medical attention and hearing aids. This event mirrored a prior initiative conducted by the Lions Club Labasa before the pandemic. Mr. Mohammed advocates for more fundraising efforts to enable children to receive treatment overseas, similar to former medical trip initiatives.

He highlighted the crucial role ears play in communication, urging more awareness within the community regarding ear health. It’s a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those with hearing impairments and the importance of access to specialized care.

In summary, Mr. Mohammed’s efforts reveal a pressing need for increased audiological support in the region, along with greater awareness of ear health issues. His emotional connection with the patients speaks volumes about the potential for change when communities come together to address healthcare needs.

This situation underscores an opportunity for positive community engagement, encouraging local organizations and health authorities to collaborate in establishing regular audiometric services in Labasa to benefit those in dire need.
