Hearing health is often overlooked by many, according to Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia. During a recent two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, he examined 40 patients, ranging in age from four to 80 years.
Mohammed noted that many individuals he encountered faced various ear issues, such as perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals due to wax buildup, scar tissue, and discharge from the ears, often stemming from improper care. He expressed concern that there is a lack of audiometrists in the northern region of Fiji, resulting in patients having to travel to Suva for medical advice.
He hopes that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa at least once a month to better serve local patients. During his screenings, he was particularly moved by a female patient with hearing impairment who, after receiving treatment, experienced joy upon hearing sounds again thanks to a hearing aid.
Mohammed also assessed students with hearing challenges from the Labasa School for Special Education, some of whom required urgent medical attention and hearing aids. He reminisced about similar initiatives he participated in before the COVID-19 pandemic, organized in collaboration with the Lions Club Labasa, and expressed a desire for more community engagement to raise funds for children in need of overseas treatment.
He emphasized the profound impact that hearing loss can have on individuals’ lives, underscoring the pivotal role that ears play in communication and overall quality of life. His return to Labasa after years highlighted the necessity for greater awareness and resources dedicated to hearing health in the region.
This initiative shines a light on the need for enhanced healthcare services for ear-related issues, particularly in underserved areas. With the possibility of a future partnership between health ministries and local organizations, there is hope for improved patient support and the potential for children and adults alike to regain their hearing.
By raising awareness and ensuring access to medical care, communities can work together to uplift those facing hearing challenges, fostering a more inclusive environment for all.
